Small Batch Series Focus: Glasgow 1770 Pineau des Charentes Wine Cask
Tuesday 13th May 2025Glasgow 1770 Pineau des Charentes Wine Cask Batch 01, Peated 58.7% ABV
The Glasgow 1770 Pineau des Charentes Wine Cask release is the result of a single finishing cask, bottled at five years of age. The whisky was initially matured in a first fill ex-bourbon barrel, before a period of secondary maturation within a French Pineau des Charentes Rouge fortified wine barrique.
Pineau des Charentes is a regional fortified wine from the Cognac region in western France that combines grape must with Cognac eau-de-vie before maturation for at least 14 months. Produced in a variety of formats, the cask within which our whisky has been maturing was a Très Vieux Pineau des Charentes Rouge, where the wine has been matured for over 10 years. Produced from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Merlot grapes, the grape must used in the production process undergoes contact with the grape skins, extracting colour and tannins for notes of dark berries and spices.
This is the first Pineau des Charentes matured release from The Glasgow Distillery. Cask number 19/1500 was a first fill ex-bourbon barrel that was filled on the 14th of October 2019 with our rich and smoky peated style before the contents were transferred into the 225 litre Pineau des Charentes barrique on the 27th of April 2023. The secondary maturation lasted for one year and ten months before bottling on the 5th of March, 2025.
Bottled at 58.7% ABV with 303 bottles available, this release is a harmony of sweet peat smoke, oak spice, and dark fruit-led notes gained by the finishing wine cask. The whisky is packed with notes of toffee apples, maple-smoked ham, walnuts, vibrant orange zest, and green peppercorns.

Distillery Team Tasting Notes
The Nose: Rich, sweet smoke with a dark fruit-forward character. Prominent notes of maple-smoked ham marry with soft caramel and toffee apples, leading to a freshly cut hay earthiness.
The Palate: Notes of smoky BBQ with sweet butterscotch give way to long-lasting dark fruits, blackberries and waxy orange zest. A subtle nuttiness reminiscent of chopped walnuts and smoked almonds.
The Finish: A soft and long-lasting smoke gives way to notes of flamed orange zest, oak tannins, and a delicate fruity green peppercorn spice.
