Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Wins Gold!

The International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) is one of the most prestigious global spirits awards, where spirits are blind-tasted by a panel of industry experts from all sectors of the drinks trade.

The Distillery Team are delighted to share the news of receiving two Gold Medals in the 2023 IWSC awards. Our flagship expression Glasgow 1770 The Original Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been awarded a Gold Medal and our 2022 Small Batch Series release Glasgow 1770 Golden Beer Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky has also received a Gold Medal, both earning 95/100 possible points.

Glasgow 1770 The Original

Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky The Original is our double distilled unpeated style and forms one-third of our Signature Range. Matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks before finishing in virgin oak, The Original is a fresh and fruity single malt presented at 46% ABV.

Tasted by Richard Paterson OBE, Billy Abbott, Nate Gana and Dr Bill Lumsden, the panel described The Original as “Bold and fruity with concentrated compote layered with rich biscuits. Sweet and surprisingly creamy on the palate with sweet baking spices of cinnamon as the sweetness is complimented by orchard and tropical fruit aromatics.”

Glasgow 1770 Golden Beer Cask Finish

Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Golden Beer Cask Finish was released in late 2022 as part of our Small Batch Series. In collaboration with Innis & Gunn brewery, Golden Beer Cask Finish was our first beer-matured experimental release; our unpeated double distilled single malt was matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks before finishing in a Pedro Ximenez sherry cask that had previously held Innis and Gunn’s Golden Beer for three months. Bottled at 57.5%, the combination of fruity spirit, sherry and beer hops proved for a popular sell-out release.

Tasted by Richard Paterson OBE, Billy Abbott, Jim Beveridge, Matt Chambers and Ludo Ducrocq, they described Glasgow 1770 Golden Beer Cask Finish as “Elegant nose with fresh fruit salad that develops as it is in the glass, with generous ginger and spice that continues to develop. The palate expresses maple syrup and toffee apple with a lingering finish of almonds and hazelnuts.”

In addition to our two Gold Medal wins, Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Peated, part of our Signature Range, also picked up a Silver Medal with the judges describing this rich and smoky single malt as: “a well-balanced nose with wood spiciness, peat, malt and complex fruit notes. Heavy oak and rich sweetness on the nose is perfectly complimented by buttered bread and baking spice.”

To receive such positive feedback from a panel consisting of the world’s most knowledgeable and revered whisky authorities is a truly humbling and gratifying experience for everyone within the distillery. By ranking our single malt alongside the very best in the industry these awards help solidify our mission of producing exciting and innovative whisky releases with authenticity and transparency at their heart.
